your cell phone, fully charged, with the ServTracker app downloaded.
hand sanitizer
your Meals on Wheels volunteer badge (ask the expediter at pickup if you need one!)
your Meals on Wheels tray to help transport meals from car to door (ask the expediter at pickup if you need a tray)

Never leave a meal on the porch or handle. Because our deliveries double as a safety check, we must confirm the client is safe. Follow these steps:
Knock and announce loudly: "Meals on Wheels!" (Many clients are hard of hearing).
If no answer, call the client: Use the phone number listed on your route sheet/app.
Call the office: If there is still no answer, make a notation in the mobile app. You can deliver the extra meal to the next recipient on your list that does not have special dietary needs. We will check with the recipient and their emergency contacts. No other action is needed on your part.
-
You are our eyes and ears on the ground. If you notice significant changes in a recipients physical health, mental clarity, confusion, or changes to their home environment (e.g., no power, extreme hoarding, structural safety issues), notify our office immediately through the mobile app. If you feel the message is urgent, call us at 434.847.0796.
-
What do I do in a medical emergency?
If you arrive and a client has fallen, is unconscious, or is experiencing a severe medical crisis:
Call 911 immediately.
Do not attempt to move the recipient.
Call the Meals on Wheels office immediately after alerting emergency services so we can send staff to your location.

Yes. As a volunteer for a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, you can track your mileage driven for deliveries and claim it as a charitable deduction on your income taxes. The office can provide a year-end letter confirming your volunteer hours upon request.
“I truly believe I get more out of this than I give. It is hands-down the best part of my day.”
