Why volunteer with Meals on Wheels?
You make a direct difference in the lives of our neighbors! Many community members depend on volunteers for their lunchtime meal—for some, it may be the primary meal they receive all day. Beyond nutrition, the friendly visit from a volunteer provides valuable human connection.
How long does it take to deliver a route and how often do I serve?
Delivering a route takes a 75-90 minutes. Schedules are flexible—you can volunteer once a month, twice a month, once a week, or as an occasional substitute.
Do I see the same community members each time?
Most volunteers are assigned to a consistent route in a specific neighborhood so they can build relationships with the neighbors they serve. If you prefer variety, you can sign up as a regular substitute driver to pick up open route slots on a week-by-week basis.
Can I involve my children or bring a partner?
Yes! Our community members love visits from kids. Delivering with a partner is a best practice—one person drives while the other navigates and takes the meal to the door. If you don't drive, partnering with a friend or family member who has a vehicle is a great way to volunteer together.
What are your delivery hours and days?
We deliver meals every Monday through Friday during lunchtime, including holidays (when volunteers often deliver extra special goodies!). We do not deliver meals during evenings or weekends.
How can I help if I cannot deliver during lunch or don't drive?
We offer a variety of flexible support options outside of regular meal delivery times! Check out our Get Involved page to learn about special projects, donation drives, and event support.
What happens when there is inclement weather?
In the event of questionable weather conditions, we update our status page no later than 7:00 AM. Our team monitors the weather closely to keep high-need neighbors fed and safe. Please check the website before heading out on your route. Volunteer safety is always our priority.
Is volunteer mileage tax deductible?
Yes! Mileage driven for charitable delivery is eligible for tax deductions. We encourage you to keep a log of miles driven and consult your tax specialist for specific details.
Can I volunteer to fulfill court-ordered or required community service hours?
Due to training requirements, limited daily hours, and strict delivery timeframes, route delivery is generally not a fit for mandated community service hours. Local partners like Lynchburg Daily Bread, Parkview Community Mission, or the Salvation Army are great local resources for community service requirements.
